Introduction

Poker Prophesier is a Texas Hold'em poker simulator which is able to perform a broad range of analysis and calculate different types of odds and probabilities for a game of Texas Hold'em.

The Poker Prophesier graphical client is an interface to the simulator which allows a user to enter different game scenarios, perform simulations and probability calculations and display the results.

Graphical Client Layout

PP Graphical Client

The graphical client has the following core components:

1. Simulator Mode Tabs

The simulator has two distinct modes which have slightly different interfaces:

  • Me vs Opponents
This mode analyses a game from the perspective of a specific player, me, playing against several other players. In this scenario, only my own hole cards, the community cards and the number of other players are known.

  • Player vs Player
This mode analyses a game from the perspective of several players and can be used to model the relative positions of players in a game, and the probable winner. In this scenario, the hole cards for multiple players are known, in addition to the community cards.

2. Card Deck

The Card Deck is the means by which cards are added and removed to and from the Game Settings panel, by selecting and de-selecting the relevant cards.

3. Game Settings & Simulator Options

The Game Settings and Simulator Options panels are used to define the cards and the parameters that the simulator will use to perform the analysis of the game and calculate various probabilities.

4. Analysis Results Tabs

The Analysis Results Tabs vary for each simulator mode, but contain the analysis and results calculated by the simulator.

Game Settings

In Me vs Opponents mode, the user is able to enter their own hole cards and a selection of community cards by selecting and deselecting cards from the Card Deck panel and the Game Settings panel.

The total number of simulator players (me and at least one opponent) can be selected by setting the Total Players spinner.

After the simulator has been run, the significant cards in the hand will be highlighted in green, indicating that they are the cards which comprise the hand rank. For example, the three cards which make up a three-of-a-kind would be highlighted.

The cards which are less significant, i.e. the kicker cards, would be highlighted in blue.

Simulator Options

The manner in which the simulator performs the calculations can be configured by enabling and disabling the following options:

  • My Outs: Ignore community only hands
This option configures the simulator to only include cards which would improve my own hand and to ignore cards that would solely lead to better community hands, i.e. hands that are shared amongst all of the players.

  • Opp Hand: Only realistic hole cards
In order to take into account that opponents in a game do not just play random hole cards, this option configures the simulator to base its calculations on the fact that an opponent will have a vaguely reasonable starting hand.

As a general rule of thumb, a reasonable starting hand is considered to be:

    • A pair
    • Suited connectors
    • Same suited Ace and another card
    • Cards that have a combined face value of 20 or 21

  • Opp Hand: Only hands better than my hand
This option configures the simulator to only calculate the probabilities of opponent hands which are better than my current hand.

Running the Simulator

The number of simulations which will be used to model the probable outcome of the game can be configured by modifying the Num Simulations spinner.

The simulator is started by pressing the Run button and the GUI can be reset by pressing the Reset button.

Analysis Results Tabs

The analysis results tabs consist of the following panels:

  • My Hand
The My Hand panel contains the analysis of the current hand, specifying the hand rank, a breakdown of the component cards and the possible drawing hands.

  • My Outs
The My Outs panel details the odds of achieving a particular hand by the river, determined by a combination of mathematically enumerating all possible hands and analysis of the potential outs which will improve the current hand.

  • Opponent Hand
The Opponent Hand panel contains the analysis of the current hand that an opponent may have, given the community cards which have been dealt. The probabilities aren't future predictions of what hand one or many opponents may achieve by the river, rather they reflect the current hand that any single opponent may have already achieved. The probabilities are determined by performing a mathematical enumeration of all possible hands that an opponent may have.

  • Game Result
The Game Result panel details the probabilities of my winning, tying or losing the game. The probabilities are determined by performing a set number of simulations given the number of players, using randomly generated cards and evaluating the resulting hands.

Game Settings

In Player vs Player mode, the user is able to enter community cards and the hole cards for multiple players by selecting and deselecting cards from the Card Deck panel and the Game Settings panel.

Optionally, a player can be marked as folded or a position empty by checking the appropriate player checkbox.

After the simulator has been run, the hole cards of the player predicted to win the game will be highlighted in green.

Running the Simulator

The number of simulations which will be used to model the probable outcome of the game can be configured by modifying the Num Simulations spinner.

The simulator is started by pressing the Run button and the GUI can be reset by pressing the Reset button.

Analysis Results Tabs

The analysis results tabs consist of the following panel:

  • Game Result
The Game Result panel contains the probabilities of each player winning/tying the game. The probabilities are determined by performing a set number of simulations, using randomly generated cards and evaluating the resulting hands.

Simulator Updates

A check can be made to determine whether a new version of the simulator is available by selecting the menu option: Help → Check for Update....

Selecting this option will make the graphical client check with the Poker Prophesier website to determine whether the version is current or not.
